What is iPhone Tethering ?
For those of us who are new to this, tethering is a way to get internet access on a device using some type of mobile device like a cell phone. Tethering was initially done using USB cables but can now be done using Bluetooth technology. You can connect your laptop to the internet using the iPhone to behave like a modem.
To use an iPhone or any other mobile device as a tethering device, the user has be signed up for a data access plan with the carrier. In many cases even though free Wi-Fi access may be available in many public places, users still might have the need to connect on more secure network to the internet. Sometimes it might be an affordability issue, and instead of getting a wireless card, using the mobile device like the iPhone to gain access to the internet might be cheaper.
iPhone 3g tethering is a simple process, but some carriers don’t provide this service and in some cases it may void the phone’s warranty or violate the service plan terms with the carrier. There might be additional monthly fees for tethering your iPhone. In the US, the major carrier for iPhone 3GS does not provide tethering capabilities yet. There are third party applications available that you have to download as a tethering workaround for the iPhone and let you connect to the device via USB or Bluetooth. Check your data plan to make sure you don’t have a big shock when you see the next bill.
Tethering your iPhone is just another way to connect another device to the internet. It has its advantages, but make sure you do it right and check with your carrier to verify if they provide this service and what the consequences might be if you decide to use other third party applications to tether your iPhone.
