CNN’s iPhone App

CNN just launched their application for the iPhone and iPod touch. It’s available to download for $1.99 at the Apple store. This application has been created with the goal of providing a more visually driven experience for iPhone users. It just makes it more convenient for iPhone users who like to get their news from CNN.

With the CNN App for iPhone, you can read all the latest news that interests you and watch live breaking news videos across all categories. The navigation is easy and you can basically flick or scroll through stories just like your albums on the iPhone. You can have just the highlights or full stories of the latest news on your iPhone and even share them using other social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter etc.

This app for iPhone also make it easier to be an iReporter since it provides a direct gateway for iReport.com, CNN’s iReporting site for anyone reporting from current news locations with pictures or videos.

One of the long awaited features on the iPhone makes its debut on the AT&T network today - Sept 25 2009.  For long, iPhone did not have MMS capabilities, something that was a given on even basic phones.

All that is about to change today !

MMS or multi-media-messaging will be available only on the iPhone 3G.  MMS will enable iPhone 3G users to send and receive pictures, contacts, audio files and gps locations.

This will in an instant chew up the bandwidth available as people start exchanging photos and other content - which takes a larger amount of wireless space- we will see as the days go by how AT&T's 3G network holds up!

Portable Speaker System for iPhone

If you have all your music on your iPhone 3G, a portable speaker system for the iPhone would be a good accessory to own. You could listen to your music list on a picnic, or while you relax in a hotel room after a long days work away from home.

There are some really good brands out there. After doing some research the LiveSpeakr portable speaker system for iPhone is what I finally got. The reviews were good, but one is never sure till you actually try it yourself. I must say I was quiet pleased with it. The sound quality is very good for something so small. They were not kidding when they mention that its high quality speakers! Works well when I use it as a speaker phone for my iPhone. Its size is also small enough to not take too much room in my bag. It does come with a case for travel. I love that it twists into different shapes like portrait mode, landscape mode and storage mode. It comes with a mini USB cable for charging and the battery charge usually lasts at least 12 hours for me. I’m not a big fan of the foldable stand though.

I must say the only beef I have with LiveSpeakr for iPhone is I can’t charge my iPhone while the music is playing. For the price, I love the sound quality, size and portability that this speaker system offers.

Finance application for iPhone. You can use this app to track companies, market indices and financial market news. It lets you drill down into specific companies for additional data like market quotes, trend charts and other details on the stocks.

This is much better than the Yahoo Stocks app that comes with your iPhone. You can download the free app from the Apple’s website. You can also use the browser based version on the yahoo website for mobile applications.

This app will keep you current with the information on stocks you watch, with current market data coming from the stock market straight onto your iPhone.

How do you tether iPhone?

Tethering on iPhone is a way to get internet access on a device using some type of mobile device like you iPhone. You can connect your laptop to the internet using the iPhone to behave like a modem using either USB or Bluetooth connection.

Using your iPhone to connect to the internet on your laptop is useful.  In the US, AT&T does not provide this service so check how its going to affect your data plan and if it affect any warranties etc.. They say this service is coming in the near future, but of course there will be a charge. Until then if you want to tether iPhone 3G here is some guidance.

To tether iPhone 3G, you will need to download and install a carrier update file. There are multiple sites that you can find one of these for your iPhone 3G. Make sure you have the one for your country and carrier. Once the file is installed all you need to do is go to Settings -->General -- >Network and turn on Internet Tethering and select USB or Bluetooth. Now you’re all ready to connect your computer to the internet.

With this method you don’t need to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS to tether iPhone to laptop. You might use a lot of bandwidth and that might be an issue with your carrier. Check your data plan before you attempt to tether iPhone. Do it at your own risk, since you might get slapped on with some additional fees later.

MobileMe on iPhone – Easy Sync For iPhones

Now that you have your new iPhone, it adds to the complications of keeping another device synced to your PC and or Mac along with any other device you have. Manually syncing is tedious and time consuming. But when you deal with multiple devices like I do,  or when I am on the road,  I might not see my desktop or laptop for days and my laptop, desktop, and iPhone were not synced for days together. This would be an issue when I had to ask my assistant to pull out some contact or other info from my machine when I was away.

This is when I learnt about Mobile Me.  My digital life has became so  lot easier once I got the MobileMe service. This enables me to push email, my calendar events and contacts over the air to all of my computers and other devices. I don’t have to use the docking station anymore to sync my iPhone. MobileMe on iPhone syncs all these automatically and all my information is always current on both my PC and laptop.

My calendar is in sync on all my devices. When there’s a change on an appointment time I usually have only my iPhone with me, and changing the time there is reflected on all my devices. So my assistance also gets it and she doesn’t schedule me to be at multiple places at the same time!

On joining MobileMe, you get a me.com email account which is always current. All new messages are pushed to iPhone automatically and the inbox looks the same on all devices. This includes how the messages are marked like when they are read or forwarded. There is spam and virus protection provided by MobileMe.

The address book is also entirely accessible from my computers and iPhone with MobileMe Contacts. When I meet a new client and enter the all their information including a photo at times , on my iPhone, it instantly appears on my address book on outlook on both my computers. One doesn’t have to manually sync it anymore.

I find that MobileMe on iPhone is an extremely useful application. All information stays updated at all times and I don’t have to find time to manually sync all the devices.

MobileMe is available on Amazon , J&R and iTunes.

What is iPhone Tethering ?

For those of us who are new to this, tethering is a way to get internet access on a device using some type of mobile device like a cell phone. Tethering was initially done using USB cables but can now be done using Bluetooth technology. You can connect your laptop to the internet using the iPhone to behave like a modem.

To use an iPhone or any other mobile device as a tethering device, the user has be signed up for a data access plan with the carrier. In many cases even though free Wi-Fi access may be available in many public places, users still might have the need to connect on more secure network to the internet. Sometimes it might be an affordability issue, and instead of getting a wireless card, using the mobile device like the iPhone to gain access to the internet might be cheaper.

iPhone 3g tethering is a simple process, but some carriers don’t provide this service and in some cases it may void the phone’s warranty or violate the service plan terms with the carrier. There might be additional monthly fees for tethering your iPhone. In the US, the major carrier for iPhone 3GS does not provide tethering capabilities yet. There are third party applications available that you have to download as a tethering workaround for the iPhone and let you connect to the device via USB or Bluetooth. Check your data plan to make sure you don’t have a big shock when you see the next bill.

Tethering your iPhone is just another way to connect another device to the internet. It has its advantages, but make sure you do it right and check with your carrier to verify if they provide this service and what the consequences might be if you decide to use other third party applications to tether your iPhone.

Using iPhone 3GS and YouTube

Of all the iPhone applications available one of the most liked is the feature which lets you watch and share videos on YouTube. You can use your iPhone to share your videos or watch and explore the countless videos available on YouTube.

After the release of the iPhone 3GS, YouTube reported that mobile uploads were up by 400% in six days. This in itself is a good measure of the iPhone 3GS’s video capabilities. Now you can use your iPhone to share those moments you so enjoyed with friends or family or the world and never lose the opportunity to capture the video without the need of your bulky camcorder all the time.

On your iPhone, tap the YouTube icon to be redirected to the YouTube page. Here you can search or videos by keywords and browse to get to videos you would like to watch, using the virtual keypad. Once you narrow down to the video you would like to watch, touch the Play icon to view the video. You can access the rewind and forward features outside the mail video screen of the iPhone. You can also upload videos directly to your YouTube account using your iPhone 3GS and the quality is quiet good. Just select the video and tap the share button and select “send to YouTube”. You can add a title and or description and then publish to YouTube.

With the iPhone 3GS, sharing your videos on YouTube is a breeze. The steps are quiet easy and anyone can use it, even the not too technologically savvy iPhone user.

Video on your iPhone

With the arrival of the iPhone 3GS, comes the much awaited video recording capabilities. Users of older models were using outside applications and methods to record video on their iPhones.

Most users are quiet satisfied with it. Though they are only basic video capture and editing features, it’s a good start for current iPhone users. The camera toggle is used to switch to video mode from photo mode. You can record at 30 frames-per-second VGA resolution video in landscape or portrait mode. The 3.5 inch screen can be used to view the video while recording. There are no zoom and other camcorder features, but quality is quiet good for video on your cell phone. The audio too is good.

The video editing tools available on the iPhone 3GS are also basic, but useful. You don’t have to upload the video to a computer to edit. The iPhone provides you the ability to trim your footage by just selecting the frames you want to be the start and end o your clip. Its easy to transfer the video too, since you can easily email it or upload to YouTube or use your MobileMe account to sync your videos. Right now these videos don’t sync in iTunes. The clips don’t look too great when blown up on the computer mainly due to the resolution. The recording is disabled while the phone is being used. This might be a downer for some folks, but how often does one want to record video while on the phone; unless you’re covering a news story! You can however record video while in the midst of texting though.

This iPhone is not ready to replace your full fledged camcorder, but it’s convenient to have video features on your phone. There are many others out there that may have better quality video but for iPhone users this feature is just another plus.
